Swiss Re on risk: Nanotechnology
Author: Annabelle Hett, Swiss Re
This Q&A brochure was published in 2004 for US-based clients in particular.
To effectively determine both the long-term properties and the general reliability of nanoproducts as well as their effects on human health and the environment, all involved parties – scientists, businesses, regulatory authorities, consumers and the insurance industry – must engage in an ongoing risk dialogue. It is the purpose of this flyer to foster understanding, in particular between US-based stakeholders, in order to prevent a polarized debate that may slow down future research, economic growth, and insurability in this field.
Published quarterly, "Swiss Re on risk" is an online publication that focuses on emerging risks and insurance-related issues impacting our US-based clients. If you wish to be notified when the next issue of "Swiss Re on risk" is available, please contact Corporate Communications.
"Nanoparticles are too small to be visible to the naked eye – so small, in fact, that one would have to split a human hair 80,000 times before it reached a width of 1 nanometer (nm)."
